On August 22 our Lord Jesus received into his loving arms his humble servant Rev. Herbert W. Buckley after a recent diagnosis of cancer. Herb was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1927 to Herbert and Phoebe Buckley. Childhood found him in service to the Episcopal church as an altar boy; he also achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts. All the while he was making lifelong friends whom he loved dearly and shared many stories about. During his senior year he joined the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Culebra Island at the end of WWII in the Philippines.
After the war Herb graduated from Newark Teacher’s College, earning a B.A. in Industrial Arts. Soon after, he rode his Harley Davidson across the country to visit a cousin in Montana. He loved Montana immediately, adopting the saying “I wasn’t born in Montana, but I got here as quick as I could.”
Returning to New Jersey, he soon met Carlee, his devoted and loving wife of 67 years. They moved to Montana to raise their family in the Helena area. As a master carpenter, Herb built many homes in the Helena area, including 15 homes up Colorado Gulch, a place they called home since 1961.
Herb retired from carpentry and became a devoted priest for the Episcopal Diocese of Montana, serving many communities in Montana as well as Arizona and Utah.
