Jack Nickel passed away on March 5, 2013 at St Peter’s Hospital. He was 83 years young. He refused to act his age as he said it was just a number. He enjoyed life especially with his wife and best friend Mary.
He was born in Indianapolis, IN, July 24, 1929 to Carl and Marguerite Nickel, the second eldest of four children. His parents and two brothers have passed on plus his granddaughter Lindsey.
Jack loved sports and excelled in track and field and golf. He played golf on his high school team and three Navy golf teams playing all over the world.
He joined the Navy June 1, 1948 and retired March 21, 1969 as a Chief Petty Officer.
On January 19, 1950 he married his high school sweetheart, Mary J Poyser. He is survived by his wife and following family members: Sons, Steven (Sandi) and Larry (Debbie) of Helena, daughter Debbie (Lyle) of Spokane, sister Marlene, grandchildren: Brianna, Kirsten, Calli, and Cody, and one great grandson, Jax.
He did volunteer work in many locations around Helena but enjoyed none more than volunteering in the Cancer Treatment Center at St Peter’s Hospital.
Dr. Weiner, nurses, and volunteers are to be thanked for the outstanding job they do for the patients and caregivers.
Graveside service with full Military Honors will be held, Friday, March 8, 3:00pm at Montana State Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please donate to the charity of your choice. Jack was a fine man. Someone to look up to. His fellow volunteers were privileged to follow in his footsteps. He helped cancer patients with his genuine compassion for them. None of us will ever forget him.
