Joe Angell said a peaceful adios to this life four days before his 86th birthday. He was an amazing man who was passionate about so many things: reading good literature, listening to jazz and classical music, playing his cornet, sailing, birds, gardening, walking in the woods, the night sky, the sea, clean water, clean air, protecting the environment, travel-especially to Europe, Costa Rica, Alaska and the Baja Peninsula, riding his Harley, camping, a few good friends. He is survived by his cherished wife Meg, his brother Gordon Angell, his sister Dolores Smith, his favorite niece Carole Smith, his daughter Halcy Driskell and son-in-law Joe Driskell, his granddaughter Kaity Driskell, Meg’s son and wife John and Carrie Arvish, Meg’s son Brian Arvish, several nieces and nephews, and his beloved cat JazzPurr. It is Joe’s wish that there will be no memorial service or gathering, he wants people to remember him as he was when they last spent time with him.

I am greatly saddened by the passing of Joe. Our hearts go out to Meg and Halcey. We are so glad we got to spend a little time with him in the last few years. We had many great experiences together and they are cherished. He was one of the most unique individuals we have ever known and we learned much from each other about the truly important things in life. Thanks Joe. Happy Birthday today and forever.

When we were little kids living in FL Joe and Gordon would drive down and stay with us. I thought they were so exciting…a lot because Joe had these racy cars. The one I remember best was the white Jaguar (and still think of him every time I see one now…altho they do not look the same) and how Mom was teasing him and pretending to sit on the fender….boy! did she get a quick response from her brother!!
And then years later, when Joe moved West I thought he was so exotic. It seemed such a brave and adventuresome thing to do. When he and I were walking around Savannah while we were there for Mom’s 90th birthday celebration, we talked about our love for the West and I had that feeling all over again, he lead an adventuresome life and I shared a piece of it….

Uncle Joe, you will be missed dearly! We thank you for all the amazing Harley adventures, stopping for a cold one and dancing the night away, for sitting through cold/sunny soccer and baseball games with the kids, the memories and the stories we have to share, the fun we had and making us welcome to Montana! We will miss your hugs and your funny and clever as ever Birthday cards you sent! Love always, The Angell’s in Bozeman, MT, Phil, Kelly, Holly and Joshua

Meg and Families,
We were sorry to hear of Joe’s passing. He really knew how to appreciate the finer things in life – including you, Meg. What a pleasure to know you both and we send our thoughts, today and in the days ahead. My Mom (Jeannie Pullin) spoke fondly of Joe, also. He rented from her many years ago. She always enjoyed talking with him and hearing his philosophies on life.
Peace to you and yours,
Tim and Patti Borsberry

My best thoughts of Joe go way back to 1974. My wife Kally and I were newly settled into Helena, Montana and had just started our new jobs. We were invited on our first backpacking trip that August. Turns out that was a trip of a lifetime.
We journeyed to climb Granite Peak, the highest mountain in Montana. Joe was our leader. Our trip was not easy. After a long day of hiking our first camp was on Froze to Death Plateau. The day we assended the mountain Joe made sure we were all safe and led the way across the snow bridge from Tempest to Granite. Along the way he patiently waited and assisted, this first time climber. If not for Joe and Rick Bondy pulling me up rock cliffs, I would have never made it to the summit. What a glorious site at 12,799 feet.
It’s been 45-years since that trip, and I still often think about it. Thank you Joe for the trip of a lifetime.
How’s the view now? RIP Joe.

Mike and I have such wonderful memories of the times we spent with you Joe and my sweet Sis, Meg…so thankful and blessed to have found each other nearly twenty years ago.
Joe, you were the best brother-in-law a sister could ever ask for…thoughtful, kind, talented, adventurous…always ready for that next trip on the motorcycles or swim in the warm Baja waters.
We miss you Joe and we’ll love you forever XOXOXOOXOXXOXOOXO
