On the evening of October 19, Joe left the earth unexpectedly. The first child and only son, Joe was born to Paul and Mary Ann (Wellbank) Smietanka in Oak Park, Illinois on December 14, 1982. Joe attended Clancy School, Helena High, and was currently a student at Helena College, and a member of Crossroads Fitness Center and the Billings Bulls Rugby Club. He loved learning, creative writing, working out, and family. He was a wonderful son and brother and the world’s proudest, dedicated, most awesome uncle.
Joe was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joe and Marie Smietanka, and John “Jack” and Mary Wellbank. He is survived by his parents, Paul and Mary Ann; sister, Alexandra “Alex” Smietanka; niece, Xela Hamper; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
A celebration of Joe’s life will be held at the Kleffner Ranch Pavilion, 305 Hwy 518, East Helena, MT at 12 pm on Saturday, November 12 followed by a buffet lunch. For those who knew Joe, please share your memories at his celebration or privately with the family.

I just found out today about the passing of my dear friend joe from the student scholarship in his honor at the Helena College. i struggled with alcoholism, drug addiction and numerous incarcerations. i have been clean and sober 6 years and 8 months now. i have started college for Business Administration Degree, i have also got my Peer Support Certification and also taking courses to get my Real Estate license, i also have started a nonprofit corporation to help justice involved individuals gain stable housing through a 2 year homeownership program. i was deeply shocked at hearing this unfortunate news today. If there is anything i can do please reach out.
