It is with great sadness that the family of Norris Robert “Bob” McCrum, age 73, announces his passing at the Helena, MT VA Hospital on Sunday, September 10, after fighting a hard battle with Stage 4 Melanoma. He will forever be remembered by his son and best friend, Robert Walker McCrum, his young Grandson, Robbie William, and his Daughter-In-Law, Jenny McCrum. He will also be terribly missed by his 4lb Chihuahua, Sara.
Bob was born on May 8, 1944 and raised in Old Town, Maine where he graduated from Old Town High School. He served in the Air Force from 1962-67 and was a Vietnam veteran. His speciality in the AF was in Electrical Power Production and a Technical Instructor. Bob served with the Montana Army National Guard from 1983-2004 where he rose through the ranks to become the Command Sergeants Major of both the 495th and 1–163d IN.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman who had an unending love for the outdoors. He was an accomplished archer and was the New England States Champion for several years with the Fin Fur Feather Club in Connecticut. He was a North American Hunting Club life member and was a member of the Quartzsite Metal Detecting Club in AZ. Bob was a self professed Master Jack who truly possessed an amazing and unequaled skill set. This included and was certainly not limited to, wood carving skills with amazing detail, canoe racing, and Indian arrowhead procurement at Lake Nicatous in Maine. He was also an expert muzzle loader. Bob tanned and made his own buckskin outfits. His intricate and beautiful beadwork on one of his tan jackets was prominently featured on the cover of the book, “Warpath.” His attention to beadwork was legendary. Bob always liked to joke that he was born several generations too late and would have excelled as a mountainman.
He is preceded in death by his Dad (Robert Malcolm McCrum, D.O.), Mom, Ezilda Mae (Moore) McCrum, and his twin brother, George McCrum. Bob will be forever remembered by his older brother, Richard McCrum (Barbara), his little sister, Jeannie McCrum Wilson (Dick), nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
A Prayer Service in memory of Bob will be held at the Fort Harrison Chapel, 4210 MT Difensa Ave Fort Harrison, MT 59636 on Monday, Sept. 18 at 10:00 with Chaplain Ken Duvall officiating. Honor Guard will follow at the Montana Veteran’s Cemetery where a Memory Stone will be placed.
We are extremely grateful to the medical staff at the Montana VA who showed much love and compassion to Bob and his family. Memorial donations in honor of Bob may be made to help cover expenses to Jenny McCrum at PO Box 6141 Helena MT 59604.
