The deer and elk know one less tag will be filled this year because on October 29, 2017 Paul E. Hayes left earth to join his nephew in the fields of Heaven.
Paul acquired his love for hunting early in his life, which began March 3, 1933. He was born to Lila Lennox and Proctor Hayes in La Veta, CO.
Along with hunting, Paul loved America and served in the Navy from 1951-1955. He continued his patriotic service by entering the Border Patrol in 1957 at Calexico, CA. He served as an Immigration Inspector and Examiner throughout the US and Virgin Islands. He retired from the Immigration and Naturalization Service in 1990 as Deputy District Director in Helena, MT. His most memorable experience working for Immigration was when he inspected John Wayne’s plane coming back from Vietnam.
Along with being an avid hunter and horseman, Paul loved other outdoor activities such as camping and fishing. His best catch was on November 30, 1978 when he married Kathleen. Their marriage was a package deal and included four kids and a cat.
After retiring, Paul and Kathleen enjoyed babysitting their grandchildren, camping, and being snow birds in Arizona.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, newborn daughter Paula, nephew Blake Kouri, and grandson Luke Hallauer.
He is survived by his wife Kathleen and four children Lori (Jim) Hallauer, Scott (Joyleen) West, Jennifer Mazur, Jason (Kendel) West and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Donna (Albert) Robino, his nephews, and nieces.
