Madeline Amelia (Toenjes) Mohrmann passed away peacefully at her home on March 15, 2024. She was 94 years old. Madeline was born January 29,1930 in Waterloo, Illinois to Ben and Anna Toenjes, as the youngest of five children. She spent her childhood growing up on the family farm, and also attended a one room school house. After high school Madeline attended nursing school at De Paul Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. She graduated in 1950 and worked as a nurse until September 8, 1951 when she married Fred Mohrmann.
She put her nursing career on hold to raise her 10 kids. Later she went back to school to take refresher courses to become a nurse again. She then worked at a nursing home in Littleton, Colorado until they moved to Helena, Montana in 1981 where she worked at St. Peter’s Hospital until she retired. She was a wonderful nurse for 20 years.
Having a large family came with struggles, but also great rewards. Mom and Dad always wanted us to have a great childhood and did many things to create lasting memories. Even though finances were tight , they took us on many picnics in the mountains of Colorado as well as other short trips. Our big back yard was well used and our house was where the neighborhood kids wanted to hang out.
Mom was an excellent seamstress. She taught several of her five girls to sew as well. Growing up we knew every Christmas we would likely receive new pajamas or robes that she had spent hours at night sewing. Any time we were in a school program she would make our costumes. Many new outfits were sewn for Easter and Christmas. And the girls’ dolls occasionally even received new clothes. After she retired from nursing she continued sewing quilts and blankets to donate to different ministries.
Mom was also a great cook, and we learned a thing or two from her over the years. She knew how to stretch a dollar to make wholesome meals to feed all of us and we always had plenty to eat. At Thanksgiving there were always lots of homemade pies, and at Christmas she made dozens of cookies which she attempted to hide from us so that we wouldn’t eat them ahead of time.
It was a full time job raising her 10 kids and leaving such lasting memories. She will be missed, but we rejoice knowing she is now in Heaven with Jesus. Her legacy will live on through those who knew and loved her, especially her family.

The family of Madeline,
I am so sorry to learn of the passing of your dear Madeline. I sold her Amway products for years and always enjoyed our
conversations. I was just thinking about her over the weekend.
Please know she will be missed.
God Bless,
Lorri

Lynn and Dan…we are so sorry to learn of your mother’s passing. Our prayers are with you and the members of the family. We really haven’t connected very much over the years, but Bernie and I oftten talked about your mom and your dad, Fred. I really remember taking the train with my brother, Bernie and my mom, Loretta, and traveling to Littleton, CO many years ago. We stayed at your mom and dad’s house during our visit. It was great getting together with you and your mom at Linda’s house in St. Louis a few years ago. Losing our Aunt Del and now your mother makes our lives change. We are now the living generation of Ben and Annie Toenjes. Yoour mom’s smiles; her Christmas Card and letters were very special to us. Uncle Fred is also in our memories. Lynn….please express our sympathy to all your brothers and sisters.

Lynn and Dan – I remember visiting your Mom and Dad with my parents in 1959, again in 1973 and when I came out to Helena on business in 1985. I have pictures of us playing in your back yard in Littleton in 1959. They bring back fond memories of that trip. Over the years I have spoken with your Mom and she would reminisce about her and her brothers and sister’s lives on the farm back in Illinois. I learned so much about my father and my grandparents that I didn’t know. She was a kind and gentle person and I will always have good memories of your Mom and Uncle Fred. Please give our condolences to your brothers and sisters. Perhaps someday we can all be together again.
